What Are the Skills Required for a Cloud Computing Job?

Published: February 16, 2022

Cloud computing is one of the fastest growing areas of IT. The technology refers to computing services such as networks, storage, and software that can be accessed via the Internet. If you’ve sent an email, streamed a TV show, or uploaded a file to a storage app, you’ve used the cloud—and you might not have realized it. You don’t need any special skills to use the cloud, but you will need these essential technical and soft skills to work in cloud computing:

Network Systems

The cloud enables users to do more than just store and share files. It supports emails systems and videoconferencing services, and it allows you to binge-watch your favorite TV show from your phone. Each service requires a different network. If you want to work in the field, you need to know what networks are suitable for which services. You also need to understand how networks function and how they integrate with the cloud.

Data Management

Many organizations now use the cloud to store and protect their data. This means you need to be skilled in the setup and configuration of databases. You should also be familiar with different database types so you can determine which database can best serve a particular need.

Cybersecurity

As with any area of IT, security is critical. Since cloud services support data, software, and networks, they need to be secured and protected from hackers. One security breach could shut down an entire company, so you need to be vigilant in your maintenance, execution, and teaching of security procedures.

Linux

Linux is an open-source operating system that supports many computing services such as software applications, websites, and networks. It also supports public cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. You should know how to use Linux and how to maintain cloud services with it.

Cloud Providers

There are many cloud providers so you will need to understand what each one offers. For instance, Microsoft Azure is best for companies which create their own software, while Cisco is best for networks. You should understand the features of each platform and be able to recommend the best fit for your organization.

Communication

You might be a tech wizard, but not everyone is. To be effective in your job, you need to communicate well. That means listening to your boss and understanding their expectations and being able to discuss any concerns or obstacles you may encounter on a project. It also means being able to translate tech talk to something anyone can understand.

Critical Thinking

When you work in IT, you’ll be faced with technical problems that need to be solved. To produce appropriate and oftentimes creative solutions, you’ll need to sharpen your critical thinking skills. This will help you make the best decisions under sometimes chaotic circumstances.

Flexibility and Adaptability

As technology continues to evolve, so will the field of IT. You need to be flexible and able to adapt to the changes that occur in your field. This means staying current on the latest trends and best practices in cloud computing and other areas of IT. You should be open to learning to new methods and technology and be willing to hone new skills throughout your career.
