Not Waiting For Her Dream: Charter College Grad Jennifer Vasko

Published: December 2, 2015 | Updated: November 10, 2020

If you wait until everything’s perfect, you might be waiting too long.

That’s the philosophy that helped drive Jennifer Vasko to pursue her dream of an education, a career and even the purchase of her first home.

“You’re never going to be fully ready for some things, but don’t let that stop you,” said Jennifer. “You can do anything if you set your mind to it.”

Jennifer sure did. Pretty much on her own from the age of 15, Jennifer always knew she wanted to go to college but didn’t know how to get there. She was working full time and needed something flexible and fast to fit her lifestyle and her passion.

“I wanted something fast,” said Jennifer. “Four years is a lot of time to wait to get where you want to go.”

Since Jennifer was already performing accounting tasks on her job, she felt she had some solid hands-on experience.

“What I didn’t have was the ‘why’ behind the what,” said Jennifer. “We were doing it this way, but I wanted to know why.”

That’s where Charter College came in. With the help of an “amazing” student advisor, Jennifer excelled at school. She worked hard and finished her degree with a 4.0 GPA in 2010. Today she works as an Accounting and Administrative Support Specialist at the Wilson Agency in Anchorage.

Although Jennifer handles the responsibilities you might expect for someone trained in Accounting, like accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial statements, balance ledgers and financial reports, she says she has many other roles at the insurance brokerage firm.

“I have training in IT so I help with all our internal IT projects,” said Jennifer. “I help with compliance within the office, too.” When Jennifer noticed that the company’s internal wellness program needed someone to step up and run it, she stepped in. She created a comprehensive program to motivate and educate her coworkers. She thinks Live Well is a great program and says she’s always learning, attending online webinars and getting certifications to make it even better.

Jennifer knows about making things better. Last year, to her long list of accomplishments, she added the purchase of her own home. She’s proud of all she’s done and the obstacles she’s overcome.
