On the Job Hunt: Why Attention to Detail Matters

When you search for a job, it can be a challenge to find one that is the perfect fit for you. So it’s important that you do everything you can to set yourself up for success in the search and application process. One factor that can make or break your success is paying attention to the details.

Here’s why attention to detail matters on the job hunt:

Apply for the Job You Actually Want

If you’re doing it correctly, it takes time to apply for even just one job. So make sure you apply to a job you actually want. Read every detail of a job post before you apply for it.

If you miss key details  — maybe a schedule that you wouldn’t want or required skills that don't’ match yours — you can waste time on an application that won’t go anywhere. The company may not call you for an interview if you missed something important. Or even worse, you could make it to an interview, only to find out then that the position won’t work for you, when you should have known from the start.

Demonstrate Your Professionalism and Seriousness

Your resume and cover letter are your first chance to make a good impression with a potential employer. If you have typos, misspellings, poor grammar, irrelevant information or other mistakes in them, an employer is unlikely to call you. The same is true of a partially filled out application. And if you are highly qualified for a position, it would be a shame to lose out on an opportunity because of errors like these.

When you submit a well-written cover letter and resume, it makes you look professional and signals to the employer that you are serious about your career and that application.

So set yourself up for success and avoid mistakes. Before you send anything to a potential employer, completely read the job posting. Tailor your cover letter and resume to that specific position. Use as many of the same keywords in the listing as possible and cover the skills and experience it specifically mentions that match yours.

Then, even if you feel confident in your resume-writing skills, it’s a good idea to have someone else look it over to catch errors before you submit it.

Attention to Detail Helps You Prepare for Interviews

It’s totally normal to feel nervous before a job interview. But if you are prepared for it as much as you can be, you’ll feel calmer. Before your interview, review the job posting again. Look the company up online. Read its website to get a good feel for the company mission and culture. It’s also a good idea to peruse news articles related to the company that you find online so you can be current with what’s going on there.

Any background information you can learn about the company, combined with your understanding of what the job entails, will help you look and feel prepared for the interview and make a good impression because you’ll have a better sense of what to expect. Preparation like this is great because it helps you think of educated questions to ask the interviewer to show your level of interest and knowledge. It also demonstrates how  serious you are about the  job.
