I Hate My Job. How Do I Find a New Career?

Published: April 24, 2017

Everyone has the occasional bad day at work. You mess up. The boss gets angry. You get annoyed with a co-worker. But if all those occasionals are happening more and more frequently, it might be time to find a new career. Here’s what to consider and how to get on the path to the life you deserve:

What do you like to do?

Don’t just jump into something new to get out of something old. Spend a bit of time and self-reflect. What brings you joy? What are your strengths and positive attributes? It’s important to remember, though, that a career isn’t a hobby. Just because you love to scrapbook doesn’t mean you can make a career out of it. Be realistic and take a look at the industries and career paths that might be right for you. Do any of these sound like a match:

·         Business

·         Healthcare

·         Information Technology

·         Veterinary Assistant

·         Trades

Conduct real research

Don’t jump into this important decision without some serious research. Get online and check out jobs in the fields you’re considering. Sure you’ve heard that healthcare has enormous growth and opportunity, but you’re probably not going to head off to med school, right? So what kinds of jobs within healthcare could you qualify for? Or maybe it’s business. Are there jobs you’d like that could help you get your foot in the door of a business career? Ask family and friends what they do and what they like about their careers. Check LinkedIn to see who your connections are, and check out theirs. It’s a great place to network, but also to get ideas on new careers.

How can you transition from that job you hate into a career you could love?

It starts with qualifications. There may be plenty of jobs you could get with just a high school diploma, but you want a real career. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most occupations require some type of training or education after high school. So find what you want to do and then get the education you need. Look for programs that offer lots of hands-on learning with courses taught by qualified instructors who really care about your success.
