Great Ideas on How to Land the Job of Your Dreams

Published: January 27, 2020

You’ve probably heard the saying about choosing a job you love so you’ll never really have to “work” a day in your life. That’s because if you love what you do it won’t feel like work. Finding the right job in an industry you’re passionate about can make all the difference in your career and your life.

But how do you land your dream job? Here are some helpful tips:

What’s Your Motivation for a New Job?

Before you can find your dream job, you need to know what really sparks your interest. Do a self-assessment and decide what you care about. And be honest about where you are today and obstacles that might stand in your way. Do you have the time, energy, and resources to invest in yourself and your new career? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Ask family, friends, and colleagues for some constructive criticism. Don’t expect to become an accountant if you can’t balance your own bank accounts. Be realistic. Then consider the kind of career path you envision for yourself. That’s your destination. Are you willing to make sacrifices to get there? Are you willing to say no to easier options? If you want to work in the healthcare field, don’t go into retail. Interested in computers? Consider an IT career.

Be Laser-Focused on Your Career

Once you know the career path you want to take, go after your goal and don’t settle. Focus your attention on career training and jobs that align with your strengths, abilities, and passion. Apply to programs that will get you where you want to be. Invest in yourself. And when you start to look for that perfect job, consider your options. Don’t just apply to anything and everything. Instead, be strategic and make sure that the company and position are a good fit for you. Sure, you’re not going to run the whole department when you first start out, but make sure there’s room to learn and grow. When you apply, put your best foot forward. Take the time to learn about the company and customize your resume and cover letter to the position. Focus on the details, practice before you interview, and give your all to every opportunity.

Play to Your Strengths to Find the Best Job

During your self-assessment, you probably discovered that there’s a lot you’re really good at. Embrace those abilities. Go after the career that fits your strengths and be sure to show them off. If you’re well-organized and you want a business career, highlight those skills in your interviews. Use real-world examples. Maybe you set processes in place at a retail job that made life easier for managers. But your examples don’t need to be from your current job or a job at all. Maybe you’re the one who organizes fundraisers at your kid’s school. Or you run your household like well-oiled machine. The point is that when the job you seek aligns with the skills you already possess, you’re going to be a rock star!
