Campus President Tim Allen presented awards to the students graduating with honors. “It’s an honor and a privilege to celebrate all of our students’ achievements with them as they get ready to embark into satisfying and fulfilling careers,” he said.

One of those career paths involves Medical Assisting, which is in high demand throughout the United States. And Monster.com lists Washington in the top 10 states for highest paying jobs in the country.

In order to better prepare students to work in the real world, Charter College partners with local healthcare providers to give students hands-on experience through 180-hour, 5-week externships.

Josh Brack is an HR Generalist with Confluence Health, an integrated healthcare delivery system that includes two hospitals, more than 40 medical specialties and primary care, to provide comprehensive medical care throughout North Central Washington. With more than 270 physicians and 150 advanced practice clinicians, Confluence Health is the major medical provider between Seattle and Spokane.

Confluence partners with Charter College to provide externships and, potentially, jobs for our students. The students work with Casey Vogt, the Confluence Student Services Coordinator, who assigns and schedules the clinical externships. Once those are completed, Brack works with students as they apply and become candidates for positions.

“We have a constant hiring need for Medical Assistants (MA) and externships are the best opportunity for a student to understand the role of an MA at Confluence,” he says, adding that once students complete their externships, they’re often hired. “The externships are also a great way for our department heads to determine if a student might be right for an open position.”

Brack says that in addition to a top-notch healthcare education, ideal candidates also need to have additional skills. “Work ethic, integrity and customer service skills are the soft skills that make a good Medical Assistant great,” he says.

“These skills are also important to us, which is why we strive to ensure that every student who attends and graduates Charter College embodies the quality and traits which are expected, and in some cases, demanded,” said Allen. “We value and appreciate our partnership with Confluence and the other healthcare providers who provide our students with the hands-on skills they need to be successful.”
