With an Education from Charter College, Graduate Feels on Top of the World

Published: March 18, 2015 | Updated: January 25, 2019

Lani T. has always wanted a career where she could help others. Ever since she first became a lifeguard at age 14, she’s had an interest in medicine. Pursuing a career in healthcare was an obvious choice for her.

Before deciding to go back to school, Lani was holding down 3 jobs, but what she really wanted was a career. From the moment she walked in the door at Charter College, she felt right at home. During times of uncertainty, her instructors, including Ms. Clark, gave her the encouragement she needed to succeed. She truly feels that if it weren’t for the amazing staff, she doesn’t think she would have been able to accomplish all that she has.

Lani faced many challenges along the way. Now at age 50, she constantly has had to keep up with the younger generation. She’s a mother of four and has five grandchildren. While at Charter College, she has had to juggle schoolwork, 3 jobs, a long distance relationship, and taking care of her family. At times, she would only get about 4 hours of sleep. She was also dealing with extreme physical pain following an injury in 2007. Despite all these challenges, she was determined to be a great student. She remained focused on her goals and surrounded herself with positive people who helped her stay on track.

Lani had the honor to speak at graduation for the medical assisting program. Although she was nervous, her heart was full with the love and support from her family and the Charter College staff. At that moment, she felt on top of the world.

The best advice she can offer other students is to never be afraid to ask for help. At Charter College, there’s tutoring available to help you along the way. There’s always someone at the school who’s willing to help. Never give up!

Lani currently works as an Insurance Verification Clerk at Bellingham Ambulatory Surgery Center in Bellingham, WA.

Lani has always loved learning. She graduated with a Certificate in Medical Assisting and then went on to get an Associate degree in Medical Office Administration. She’s currently enrolled in the Health Care Administration program. After she completes her Bachelor degree, she plans to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
