Can You Get a Job in Cybersecurity with Just an Associate Degree?

Published: December 1, 2021

If you have an interest in computers, a knack for solving problems, and a desire to protect and serve at a technical level, a career in cybersecurity may be just the path to pursue. There’s strong demand for cybersecurity professionals, and you could work for a variety of companies across numerous industries. You would be part of an IT team that protects and defends an organization’s data against hackers and cybercriminals. And while an advanced degree should help you advance your career, you may be able to find an entry-level role with just an associate degree.

Entry-Level Jobs in Cybersecurity

It was once understood that computer-related jobs required a bachelor’s degree. But some big companies, like Apple, Google, and Tesla are starting to offer entry-level jobs to candidates with an associate degree. With the right skills, certifications and experience, you may be able to get started.

What Will You Learn in a Cybersecurity Associate Degree Program?

An A.A.S in Cybersecurity program will provide you with foundational knowledge, from some basics in math, science, and effective communication skills, to more specific computer skills. You’ll learn the fundamentals of cybersecurity including network, operations, web application, and software security and also such important concepts as:

  • Cybersecurity Management
  • Cyber Threats and Countermeasures
  • Ethical Hacking
  • Mobile Forensics
  • Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance
  • Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
  • Network Security and Monitoring
  • Infrastructure Security and Resilience
  • Cloud Security and Virtualization
  • Covert Channels

A good program will also introduce you to real-world examples of cybersecurity breaches through case studies. Exploring these examples, you will learn how hacks were detected, what was done and what could have been done to reduce the threat risk to the organizations.

Get Certified in an A.A.S Cybersecurity Program

Your program should provide you with the opportunity to attain industry certifications. These credentials verify and validate your skills in a particular area. For example, the Network+ certification demonstrates that you have the technical skills to install, maintain, and service network systems. Certifications offer benefits for an entry-level career:

  • Professional Credibility—When an employer sees a certification on your resume, they can tell that you’re serious about your career and are open to learning new things. It bolsters your credibility as a professional and can make employers more open to hiring you.
  • Edge Over Competition—Your certifications can also be a secret weapon over the competition. Those credentials can give you an edge in the hiring process because you’ll have specialized knowledge that they may not.
  • Promotions—In the long-term, if you want to advance in the field, you’ll need to keep your knowledge and skills up to date. The best way to do that is through certifications, which can enhance the skills you already have.
  • More Efficiency—When you gain new knowledge and skills, you can incorporate them into your work routine. This can help you retool previous strategies and become more efficient and better organized.

Some Certifications to Look for in your A.A.S Cybersecurity Program

Among the certifications you may be able to acquire during your program are:

  • ITF or TestOut: ITF Pro
  • Network+ or TestOut: Network Pro
  • CAP
  • CEH/CHFI or TestOut: Ethical Hacker Pro
  • Security+ or TestOut: Security Pro
  • Cloud+
