Published: March 31, 2021

Doctors and nurses may save patients’ lives, but as a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist you can help save them money. That’s because your job is to make sure that patients are billed properly for the care and treatment they receive. You also make sure that your facility gets properly reimbursed for its services. If you’re good with technology and want a career in the healthcare industry, Billing and Coding may be for you. You’ll need to learn a lot of codes, rules about healthcare, and how to use specific technology, but they’re all skills you can learn online.

What Will I Learn in an Online Program?

At Charter College, we offer an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Billing and Coding that will prepare you for entry-level jobs in the field. Your online program will be taught by industry professionals who have years of experience in billing and coding.

You can expect to learn some of the important fundamentals of healthcare that every professional needs to know. Topics include medical terminology, as well as healthcare ethics and law. Here are a few other areas you’ll cover that are specific to this career:

  • Electronic Health Records—Medical records are electronic these days, so you’ll need to learn how to manage Electronic Health Records and how to keep the information they contain confidential.
  • Billing and Bookkeeping—Since you’ll handle insurance claims, you’ll need to understand some basic principles of accounting. You’ll learn how to file insurance claims, how to manage payments, and how to help with billing.
  • Medical Codes—Coding and billing specialists use several different codes. The most prominent code is the ICD-10, or the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. It’s considered to be the industry standard and is used to classify conditions and inpatient procedures.

What Does a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Do?

As a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist, you would take information from a patient’s medical records, such as their diagnosis and treatment, and code it into billable information. Then, you’d work with insurance companies to process claims, and manage your facility’s invoices and the patient’s payments. Here are some specific duties you might have:

  • Enter accurate codes into the Electronic Health Record
  • Make sure patients fill out appropriate paperwork
  • Clarify claims information with patients
  • Follow up on outstanding payments
  • Make sure reimbursements are received
