Medical & Dental Assistant Students Create Flash Mob Video

Published: February 19, 2014 | Updated: January 25, 2019
Lancaster, CA (February 18, 2014) – Medical and dental assistant students at Charter College’s Lancaster campus came together on February 6, to create a flash mob-style video reminding viewers of the importance of washing their hands, particularly during cold and flu season.
"We’re currently learning about infection control and the teachers were researching ideas on how to reinforce the importance of hand washing. The students really liked the idea of doing a flash mob so we joined with the Medical Assisting students to put it all together,” said Charter Dental Assisting Chair Dalene Garrett. “It was a lot of fun, but it also worked. Now the students are humming the song while they wash their hands and some say it sticks with them even when they’re washing their hands at home.”
And the lesson appears to have gone beyond the students in the video. Charter Medical Assisting Chair Kristina Foster shares, “After we did the video, I walked by the MA lab and a group of students who were not in the dance were washing their hands using the techniques we taught in the dance, so they got it.”
According to the Center for Disease Control, “Hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of many types of infection and illness in all settings — from the home and workplace to child care facilities and hospitals. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community.”
